Google was founded in 1998 with a mission to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Today, there are more than 100 billion searches on Google every month, and its variety of products and services have brought the company closer to its goal of “a search engine that understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you need.”

Today the company’s wide variety of products and services, such as advertising programs, including search, display, mobile and video ads, help millions of businesses, small and large, grow online.

More than 1.3 million devices running Google’s Android operating system are activated each day around the world, and more than half a billion such devices have been activated to date.

Chrome, Google’s web browser designed for speed, simplicity and security, is now used by more than 310 million people on desktops, phones and tablets. With complementary cloud apps such as Gmail and Google Drive, users have access to their information wherever they go.

YouTube, a video sharing website which was acquired in 2006 for US$1.65 billion, today connects millions of people online through video. More than 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, and collectively 800 million people watch 4 billion hours of video on the site each month.

Other widely adopted products include Google Maps, which offers driving directions spanning 26 million miles of road in 187 countries.

Google has also made advances in fields such as artificial intelligence and machine translation; Google Translate reaches more than 200 million users world wide and can translate between 64 languages. The company is also working on long-term moonshot projects like self-driving car technology and Glass, a wearable computer that is designed to provide information when you need it but stay out of your way when you don’t.

Google also is known for its unique corporate culture, and has ranked first on Fortune magazine’s list of the best companies to work for three times since 2007.
